Why do we want to become independent?
In recent years, energy independence solutions have become increasingly popular among municipalities and companies, and even in the residential sector. The reason for this is the extreme escalation of energy prices, and the energy crisis we are currently facing. Recent events in the EU’s energy policy have also highlighted the need to find an alternative solution to energy security and to drastically reduce the dependence on imported energy sources. The EU’s flagship document for this effort and for ‘greener’ energy production is the REPowerEU.
About RePowerEU
This plan document summarises the objectives and measures that will help the Member States to find a way out of the crisis and achieve energy independence. The use of solar energy will play a key role in achieving the climate targets set by the Alliance. This green, alternative energy production is now particularly valued. It will play a crucial role in the future in the transition away from Russian energy sources, but also in achieving global climate goals. In addition, there is still a huge untapped potential for harnessing sunlight. This reinforces the justification and expansion of solar panels and solar products.
In order to have a more predictable and secure energy supply, many are looking at ways to reduce their dependence on imported energy. Further on, the price setting of energy suppliers drives this need. One such solution is the mentioned solar energy, which is an “inexhaustible” energy source. Solar panels can already convert into electricity with very good efficiency. For this reason, most people are turning to solar energy to reduce the carbon footprint of their activities.
The energy crisis and the ever-increasing demand for energy seem insatiable by now. Consequently, experts believe that energy production will be transformed in the future. The energy supply will shift towards self-sufficient, micro-level solutions, i.e. consumers (households, institutions, or businesses) will generate the energy they need to run their own operations.
Achieve energy independence with PLATIO
This trend is currently leading to the development of solar systems on roofs or around buildings. PLATIO solar pavement is one such micro-scale solution, ideal for those who want to generate clean energy locally. It also provides a solution for those who are short of space or want a more practical, aesthetic design for their property environment.

PLATIO pavement operates with zero CO2 emissions, as it generates electricity by harnessing the energy of sunlight. Further, PLATIO SOLAR uses a significant proportion of recycled raw materials to manufacture the product. This is why solar paving is one of the best solutions to achieve carbon neutrality. Also, solar pavement can supply municipal buildings, the surroundings of companies’ offices and factories, also the exterior of homes.
PLATIO solar systems
We designed the PLATIO solar system to be able to connect to the grid (on-grid) and to produce energy off-grid in a sufficiently wetted area. In the case of the grid-connected version, the solar paver can provide an alternative, green energy supply for grid-connected buildings. Eg. by paving a sufficient sized area, solar energy alone can supply the entire annual energy needs of a household.
Companies with higher energy needs can benefit from PLATIO as their energy mix will have a higher green energy ratio. In the latter case, i.e. off-grid solutions where electricity is only needed to run or charge certain equipment, electricity can easily be generated where the wetted surface is available. It is also often a more cost-effective, faster, and less administrative solution than having the utility build the power supply in a new area.

Such off-grid systems could be a green energy-powered robotic lawn mower, smart furniture in public spaces (smart bench, information desk) or charging stations for electric devices (e-roller, e-bike). PLATIO Solar has deployed more of these solutions in 2021. They have recently installed a solar bike path in the Swiss town Cham, where PLATIO charges the electric bicycles. Additionally, PLATIO Solar has brought a new approach to landscaping.
They installed solar-powered robotic lawn mowing solutions for several companies in Budapest. Today, robotic lawn mowers maintain the lawns of Market Zrt., Graphisoft Park where the green energy generated by PLATIO supplies the charging station.
So, whether you are a private individual, a company or a public institution, anyone who wants to be independent of rising energy prices or simply wants to increase the energy demand of their property, it is worth taking a significant step towards (self-)sustainability, and PLATIO can help you.
Finally, high wear resistance and a 25-year performance guarantee can be a compelling arguments for those who are concerned about sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint. Read more about the PLATIO solar pavement HERE.
