PLATIO solar pavement

PLATIO solar paver is a walkable, green building material. In our solar pavers, high-performance solar cells collect the solar energy radiated onto the surface. The solar cells are protected by heavy-duty, anti-slip, scratch and impact-resistant glass panels. The load-bearing capacity of the walk-on solar panel surface and the protection of the cables is provided by a robust frame structure.

Recycled plastic base

The frame of the product is made out of plastic waste that cannot be recycled by other methods, and no new plastic materials are used for its manufacturing. The use of materials and a special manufacturing process results in a highly durable frame structure that can ensure trouble-free operation and installation of solar panels for decades.

The advantage of the composite material of the frame is that it has better hardness properties and a longer lifespan than concrete. While High Performance Concrete (HPC) has a lifetime of up to 50 years, the composite material of PLATIO solar paver can last for longer as it has much higher tensile and compressive strength and absorbs much less water than concrete.

Application areas

PLATIO pavers can be installed – and are especially recommended on places – where conventional solar technologies cannot be deployed. Examples include windy (tornado-prone) areas, in landscape protection zones and around wooden buildings or buildings with lightweight roofs. Besides the unconventional places, PLATIO can be installed for various places, from offices and residential buildings to port infrastructure and smart cities, PLATIO represents a new generation of aesthetic, space-saving and green energy source.

PLATIO product types

PLATIO solar pavers come with opal glass in Midnight Black color.

The glass is tempered and has an anti-slip surface. We use high performance solar cells.

Opal can be used for situations where ice and snow coverage is a trait of the winter season. It is an extra anti-slip blasted surface with an opalescent character. It blends seamlessly into the appearance of regular concrete.

Product benefits

A space-saving solution

Solar technology becomes part of the built environment without taking up valuable space.

Recycled materials

PLATIO paves the way for a more sustainable urban environment and a greener future. In the spirit of waste reduction, PLATIO pavers are made out of recycled plastics and glass, as well as other waste materials.

Green and aesthetic design

PLATIO’s solar pavers support cities, buildings and homes to become exemples of sustainable architecture in the 21st century.

Easy maintenance

PLATIO is user-friendly and requires a maintenance similar to traditional pavements. It is easier to maintain than traditional roof-mounted solar panels.

Quick and easy installation

Thanks to the modular design, installation is as quick and easy as with traditional tiling.

Durability

Professional engineering expertise ensures high resistance to load, strike, scratch, weather and vandalism too.

Security

PLATIO operates safely, with low voltage and the highest possible level of slip resistance.

Efficiency

Green energy is generated by high-power solar panels installed in the pavement.

Existing technology

In contrast to futuristic concepts and prototypes, PLATIO is an existing technology that can be used right now.

Installation

PLATIO can be installed using the same methods as regular paving stones. Primarily concrete foundations are recommended due to their durability, but the product can also be installed on permeable gravel (crushed stone) foundations. In the former case, the product should be installed in a bedding layer of tile adhesive (grout or mortar) and in the latter case on a 2-4 mm bed of gravel. For terraces, decks and roof gardens, the product can also be installed on sleepers (wooden, aluminum or other) with a screw fixing.

16-21 pcs of PLATIO solar paver element forms one DC system. This should be established using the DC cable whose ends are built into the elements at the factory. The system is either connected directly to the electrical device (microinverter, charge controller, etc., depending on the purpose of the application) or it is recommended to route the wiring from the PLATIO solar system to the inverter / point of use with H07- RNF 2.5 mm rubber cable in a suitable conduit (protective tube).

The fastest way to install PLATIO solar pavers is for installers to work in teams of two. It is advantageous if one member of the team is an experienced bricklayer and the other has some experience with electrical equipment, but it is not necessary to employ a qualified electrician when connecting the PLATIO elements. The elements are installed in the same way as normal cladding elements. The slope must be checked with twine or other methods. If necessary, the elements can be adjusted or punched with a rubber hammer or by hand. PLATIO solar pavers are connected with the cables built-in the units, plus additional connectors provided by our company which are IP68 rated.

Sustainability

In addition to its technical advantages like formability and higher durability than concrete, PLATIO also contributes to sustainability. It is estimated that for every ton of cement produced, the process creates approximately a ton of carbon dioxide, all of which accounts for roughly 7 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions. The production of cement for concrete and the CO2 emissions, coming from calcination, can be avoided by using PLATIO:

The PLATIO saves the environment from approximately 25 kg of greenhouse gas emissions per square meter.

The global accumulation of plastic is a growing concern. PLATIO pavers are made from plastic waste, that can no longer be recycled any more. This way take effort to relieve the pressure of plastic on the environment.

Production of 1 square metre of PLATIO pavers recycles the equivalent of 400 PET bottles.

Green building and carbon neutral future

The European continent and other developed societies have adopted stringent climate policies to curb global warming. The European Council’s Green Pact has set a target for the EU Member States to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero is a major challenge for all: the corporate and public sectors, but most importantly for high-emitting industries.

PLATIO can therefore be the cornerstone of a carbon-neutral future, contributing as a green building material to the reduction of carbon emissions from buildings and the decarbonization of urban transport. Homes, businesses, and even municipalities can increase the share of green energy in their energy mix by incorporating a carbon-free, energy-generating building material. This aesthetic and space-saving solution can be placed on any sunny flat surface turning the pavement into a new source of clean energy in urban areas.

PLATIO contributes to Sustainable Development Goals in 3 ways:

  • Affordable and clean cities
  • Sustainable cities and communities
  • Climate action

Circular economy

At PLATIO, we consider it essential to participate in the circular economy. This is the reason why we have developed our production process for the use of mixed plastics as building materials, which cannot be recycled by other methods. We apply the circular economy approach at all points of production:

  • The product is designed to be 95% recyclable at the end of its life cycle.
  • During the supply of raw materials, we use wooden containers which are suitable for storing the products throughout the production process and can also be used for the delivery of products to the customer.
  • Finally, mounted on a board, the customer can return it to us, so that these wooden storage elements keep their function and do not create waste.
